How Impact Of Music Boosts Cognitive Behaviour?

Cognitive science is a branch which comprises an interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. In the 1950s, Cognitive science came into knowledge. The theories explained are with related to mind based complex representations and computational procedures. The studies characterize the nature of human knowledge–its forms and content–and how that knowledge is being used, processed, and gained.

We explain behavior as the actions of an organism, in context to the environment. A few of the important behavioral problems are anxiety, depression, anger, disruptive behavior.

Nowadays, it is being observed that the most common complaint of stress and depression among in the enormous population. The young generation is also suffering with complicated relationships or dealing with grief or work stress. Even a normal person also faces some common challenges of life. So, all these in combination arise into a situation which disturbs the human mind and as a result the behaviour of an individual alters. So, to resolve these altered behaviour, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is being suggested.

CBT bridges the gap between the neuroscience and psychology. CBT is short-term therapy, which helps people to change their thought process and better ways to behave against a specific problem.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Recovers

The forte CBT work on are:
  • Addiction
  • Anger issues
  • Anxiety
  • Stress and Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Disorders (Personality, Eating etc.)

Types of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Initially, identify the issue, understand the emotions and behavior the person is suffering from behavioral disorders. Then the required therapy guide through which distorts the thought patterns and perturbed the behavior. I could impart CBT in the form of individual, group, brief, guided self-help, and online sessions. The commonly performed therapeutic approaches are:

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)- Therapy is to resolve   emotional regulation and mindfulness.

Multimodal therapy- It focuses to resolve the psychological issues and must treat by applying seven different but interconnected modalities, including behavior, affect, sensation, imagery, cognition, interpersonal factors, and drug/biological considerations.

Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT)- The therapy identifies the irrational beliefs, challenging these beliefs, and learning to identify and alter these thought processes.

Along with these therapies, it also implemented music therapy was also in a few of the study groups and it showed positive results. When an individual listen to a music, their brain interprets according to the beats of that music and it bring alterations in the thought patterns which change our behaviors. The best example we can feel that we listen to happy songs; We recall the moments or memories associated with that song and we feel good., sad songs or slow songs we make us emotional or heavyhearted. It summarizes a few of the treated disorders recovered by Music Therapy:

Anxiety- A study is being carried out on the senior secondary students of Nigeria, and some of them were suffering from anxiety.  They exposed the group to CBT- music program and later found to reduce anxiety level.

The methods implemented were critical listening to the musical material, songwriting, playing various musical instruments, and using music as a point of reference to group discussion and homework assignments. They also assigned them were also to play the easily playable music instrument like shakers and bells. The therapy used CBT tools like behavioral experiments, thought records, and homework. The varied music applied are opera, rock, pop, classical relaxation, song, and breath control. The other techniques implemented are cognitive restructuring, cognitive disputation, reframing, rhythmic-based skills, attention training, and mood monitoring skills to reduce the anxiety.

Behavioral and socio-emotional wellbeing- A study on a small cohort of children performed on children to observe the impact of music. It enhances intelligence, memory, socio-emotional behavior, motor ability, and visual motor integration. It associates multiple regions in the brain with neural networks and they bring structural and functional changes because of, or concomitant with, musical training. Music is an activity, which involves the whole-brain. When a person learns a fresh thing, they develop a relationship with their mentor which creates an emotional bonding, an understanding among them. It improves behavior and socio-emotional status. It concludes that music alters neural architecture and line up with the specific learning.

General Abilities- Music has the power to elevate the general abilities like attention, memory, intelligence, and emotion. Music cognition provokes the domains of general cognitive skills like intelligence, executive functions, attention and memory. It has a strong correlation with emotional controls, personality and social interactions which got improved. Music promote mathematics, problem-solving, spatial cognition and aptitude.

I conclude it that music therapy plays a vital role in different dimensions of life. It is one of the flexible activities for implementation and individuals of all age groups adapt it easily. It increases the recovery rate of behavioral disorder up to a great extent. Overall, music has the potential to improve quality of life.
